Chris Karrer: A pioneer of German rock music died

On Tuesday, January 2, 2024, Chris Karrer, a pioneer of
experimental rock music, died in Kronach.

He had lived relatively secluded together with his daughter and partner in Kronach
for around two decades. On January 20, he would have turned 77.
He grew up in Kempten and then moved to Munich, where he was during the 1968 student movement
part of the original formation of the Krautrock band Amon Düül.

He founded the band Amon Düül II, which he turned into a rock ensemble that is well-known worldwide.
Amon Düül II has released numerous records, Karrer himself released
several solo albums and can be heard on various productions with other bands and artists.
Among others with Embryo, Ernst Fuchs the painter and Blixa Bargeld of Einstürzende
Neubauten.

At school, Chris Karrer studied the saxophone and violin.
He went to art school in Munich and finally he discovered the guitar, and in time he realized
his compositional ideas. And as ever open to new influences,
he discovered flamenco, which he interpreted in his own way,
and he was enthusiastic about music with the Arabic lute, oud, and the
Afghan rubab
