Peter Michael
Hamel
studied composition with Fritz Büchtger and Günter Bialas and musicology with Georgiades and Dahlhaus. He became involved with free jazz, political cabaret, musique concrète and electronics. Hamel worked with American composers such as Morton Feldman, John Cage and Terry Riley, attended seminars with Karlheinz Stockhausen, and founded the improvisation group “Between” (1970-1980). Hamel’s orchestral, choral and chamber music compositions are published by Bärenreiter, E.R.P. and Schott. Numerous recordings of his music are available from Wergo/Intuition and Celestial Harmonies www.harmonies.com. Hamel was professor of composition and theory at the Hamburg Hochschule für Musik und Theater from 1997 to 2012. He founded the Intercultural Music Institute in Aschau, Germany in 1998.
